McKNIGHTY-NIGHTS:
McKNIGHT SCREENWRITING & FILMMAKING FELLOWS PRESENT THEIR AWARD-WINNING WORK
Each year, the McKnight Foundation and IFP Media Arts award four $25,000 Fellowships to Minnesota’s mid-career filmmakers and screenwriters. This year, the talented 2009 Fellowship recipients will present their work and answer your questions on two nights in March at The Loft Literary Center (1011 Washington Avenue South, Suite 200, Minneapolis). We’re calling them the “McKnighty-Nights.” Bedtime snacks will follow.
McKnighty-Nights, Part I: The Screenwriters
Wednesday, March 3, 7:00-9:00
Come, children, gather ‘round for some creepy R-rated tales of murder and tragedy. This year’s McKnight Screenwriting Fellows have a penchant for the mysterious, as well as for some offbeat humor. Nicole Brending and Karen Frank will present staged readings of selections from their award-winning screenplays and talk about their bodies. Of work, that is. Shawn Laurence Otto will moderate a discussion about weaving a web of suspense in screenwriting, finding (or not finding) an agent, making it (or not making it) in the business, and other topics.
Moderator Shawn Lawrence Otto is a Minnesota-native filmmaker, political strategist, speaker, science advocate, writer, and screenwriter/co-producer of the movie House of Sand and Fog. He was a McKnight Screenwriting Fellow in 1999.
McKnighty-Nights, Part II: The Filmmakers
Wednesday, March 10, 7:00-9:00
It’s story time with the 2009 McKnight Filmmaking Fellows! Cozy up to these talented artists as they reveal the magic that got them their $25,000 Fellowships. (And by “magic” we mean hard work, talent, and good luck.) Rolf Belgum and Mark Wojahn will discuss their latest projects and show clips from their award-winning films. These filmmakers tell the stories of families who are a bit…odd, in one way or another. But their filmic approaches to these stories are dramatically different. Emily Goldberg will moderate a discussion about the fine line between fiction and non-fiction, revelation and exploitation, and the essence of what makes a movie worth watching.
Emily Goldberg’s Emmy award-winning documentary work has screened in numerous film festivals, from the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam to the Museum of Modern Art. Her 2005 documentary Venus of Mars, “a respectful, insightful treatment” of a transgender punk-rocker (Variety), continues to receive acclaim around the world. Goldberg was a McKnight Filmmaking Fellow in 2007.
