Living Inside A Perfect World of Media Images

Photographers Kristine Heykants and Evan Baden
Talk at IFP Media Arts

New technology has created a society where consuming, replicating and creating electronic images is one of the major occupations of our lives. In their exhibit A Perfect World (January 22 - March 20), photographers Kristine Heykants' and Evan Baden's exquisite images celebrate the allure of carefully constructed media images while acknowledging the unsettling nature of a life lived through pictures. Heykants and Baden will give their thoughts about their work and their wider careers at an artists' talk at IFP Media Arts (2446 University Ave. W., Suite100, St. Paul) on Tuesday, March 16 at 7:00 pm

In “Media Stories”, Kristine Heykants creates scenes that seem out of films of the 1930’s to 70’s. Glamorous women in period-perfect make-up, hair and clothing inhabit evocative settings: the art deco lobby of the Riverview Theater; a trashy 70’s hotel; a jungle that looks like it could be on a Hollywood back lot. Her talk "Real and Imaginary: Representations of the Vernacular", will reveal sources of inspiration for the Media Stories including mass communication, film and historic painting.

Evan Baden’s work touches on the experience of young people growing up in a world of constant media submersion. In his “Illuminati” series, the impassive faces of young women are bathed in the glow of the screens of computers, phones and other devices. In contrast, the subjects of his “Technically Intimate” series boldly interact through media. Here Baden has recreated real scenes of young women capturing sexually explicit images of themselves to share on the internet or by phone. Their carefully designed, brightly decorated bedrooms or dorm rooms reflect both their vulnerable youth and their reckless desire to be part of the world of glamour and celebrity.

Put together by IFP Media Arts photography curator Vance Gellert, A Perfect World attracted a large crowd and lively discussions when it opened in January. IFP is happy to be able to continue and deepen the conversation about the work through this artists' talk.

Kristine Heykants mines our cultural landscape for visual artifacts to manipulate into images. By combining pop culture elements, high-impact color and dramatic use of lighting, she makes portraits for the music industry, advertising and editorial clients. Taking influence from the worlds of cinema, painting and Pop Art, her work seeks to raise questions and provoke thought through the creation of dramatic situations and personas. Kristine's personal photo projects have been the subject of publication and gallery exhibition and she is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. Her work has led her to travel extensively abroad, in France, Germany, Italy, England, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and Australia.
